His work has been seen in theatres across the Netherlands, where he creates imaginative stage environments that support the story and atmosphere of each production. He was born in the Netherlands and is known for his creative and detailed approach to scenic design.

EDUCATION

Joris studied at the Theatre School in Rotterdam, specializing in Theatre Design with a focus on Set and Costume Design.

He was taught by, among others, AMC Fok and Marlies Schroder. In addition, he attended drawing and painting classes for twelve years under the guidance of the renowned visual artist Mart Franken.

Joris has designed sets and costumes for a wide range of productions, including Evita (Antwerp), King Arthur, The Full Monty, The Mousetrap, Alfie the Werewolf, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Antwerp), Chaplin, XXX-Mas Carola, Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, Murder on the Orient Express, Grease, The Resistance Strikes Back, From Cotton to Now, Dial M for Murder, Welcome to the Middle Ages, Cyrano, How to Survive Everything I Never Tell Anyone, Little Crumb, Murder on the Nile, and many others.

As a set designer, he has contributed to numerous productions, including The Sound of Music (Antwerp), The Fairytale Collector: The Musical, The Trumpeter, The Landlady, Crazy Babbe, Goodbye Norma Jean, Nunsense, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (The Netherlands), PIAF, Liesbeth List, CARO, Najib Amhali: Where Was I?, Foxtrot, Through the Dust, Doe Maar!, Soldier in Resistance, 101 Dalmatians, Fly with Me, Sherlock Holmes, Hugo Grotius, and many others.

AWARDS / NOMINATIONS

In 2026, Joris was nominated for a Musical Award in the category Best Set Design, Stage Design and Projections for Doe Maar! The Nederpop Musical.

Malle Babbe

The musical is based on a true and defining moment in Rob’s life, in which he drifts between dream and reality. Due to Parkinson’s disease, he is now capable of very little. To lift his spirits, Jet takes him back to his younger years as they step into the Circus of His Memory.

Accompanied by Nurse Ursula and Malle Babbe, they encounter his father and friends from the past, including Lennaert Nijgh and Anneke Grönloh. Together, they relive the highs and lows of his rich and remarkable career, including winning his first talent competition, performing on the television show Voor De Vuist Weg hosted by Willem Duys, scoring his first hit, “Ritme van de Regen,” achieving major success with “Banger Hart,” and much more.

The Hospita

The jubilee year of Simone Kleinsma is being celebrated with the first musical written especially for her: De Hospita. The musical tells the story of a revue star and comedienne from another era. Madeleine Coutard must find her way in the confusing world of today when three young students move in with her out of financial necessity.

Caro

CARO is a spectacular show for the whole family at the Efteling Theater. Filled with music, dance, and acrobatics, it takes you on a journey through the carousel of life, where you experience beautiful and moving moments alongside the main characters. This international production contains no spoken dialogue. No matter what language you speak, you will be captivated by this stunning visual spectacle.

Doe Maar!

The musical Doe Maar!, featuring all the hits of the most popular Dutch pop group of all time, is performed at the AFAS Theater.

This funny and heartwarming story is brought to life by an all star cast, including Daniël BoissevainEllen Pieters, and Han Oldigs. A six piece live band recreates the unmistakable sound of Doe Maar with classics such as “Smoorverliefd,” “Sinds 1 Dag of 2,” “Pa,” and many more.

The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music is the ultimate day out for the whole family. Its heartwarming story and beloved songs such as Do-Re-MiMy Favorite Things, and Edelweiss have made The Sound of Music a timeless classic that simply cannot be missed.

Ianthe Tavernier follows in the footsteps of Julie Andrews as the governess Maria, while Koen Van Impe, fresh from his acclaimed performance in La Cage Aux Folles, takes on the role of Captain Von Trapp. Peter Thyssen stars as Uncle Max, and An Lauwereins portrays the Mother Abbess. Singer and television presenter Geena Lisa makes her musical theatre debut as Baroness Schräder. Charlotte Suijs and Pieter Casteleyn complete the cast as Liesl and Rolf.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (BE)

The world-famous Willy Wonka opens the gates of his mysterious factory, but only for a select few lucky ones. Young Charlie Bucket and four other golden ticket winners embark on an unforgettable journey through the wondrous world of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.

A chocolate garden, an army of squirrels, and the peculiar Oompa Loompas must be seen to be believed. ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ is a spectacular new musical packed with sweet treats.

Foxtrot

Foxtrot is set in the turbulent 1930s, a time of carefree entertainment but also growing concerns about the threat of war and an economic crisis. The story begins when the naïve Josien leaves her provincial hometown and arrives at a boarding house for performers in Amsterdam. There she meets Jules and Lisette, revue stars performing at a nightclub on the vibrant Rembrandtplein.

Chaplin

The musical is set in an old film studio, where Charlie Chaplin reflects on his life, his work, and his most important creation, The Tramp, which proves to have been both a blessing and a curse for him. The production follows Charlie from his impoverished childhood in London to the peak of his career, when he becomes the most famous filmmaker in the world.

Chaplin’s life story is complex and intriguing, full of dramatic moments. This musical presents, in a spectacular and moving way, the genius as well as the deep humanity of one of the greatest minds of the 20th century.

Evita

Evita tells the story of Eva Perón, the wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón. The legendary musical follows Eva’s life journey from her humble origins to the extraordinary wealth, power, and iconic status that made her the “spiritual leader of the nation” for the Argentine people.

Trough the Dust

Following the success of Cracking the Resistance and STORK!, the creators present a brand new musical, produced especially to celebrate 700 years of Enschede: Through the Dust.

Step into Enschede’s turbulent past and experience the harsh world of the textile industry, where the young priest Alphons Ariëns seeks to mediate between wealthy industrial barons and impoverished workers.

Through the Dust is a fictional story inspired by historical events, exploring themes such as social inequality, religion, and the struggle for workers’ rights. It is not a literal retelling of history, but a contemporary interpretation of a remarkable and turbulent era.
